Dead men walking
Thorpe Park Resort in Surrey, UK, has retrofitted existing roller coaster X: No Way Out around the global TV phenomenon The Walking Dead. The Vekoma coaster, which was
known for its mid-course brake runs and for running backwards in the dark, is now The Walking Dead: The Ride. The immersive experience features state of the art special effects and a replica of the iconic watchtower from the television show. The queue-line takes guests through an immersive preshow designed by
Holovis, and are followed by a maze of deep, dark tunnels. Peter Cliff, creative director at Holovis explained: “[The Walking Dead]
showcases how existing attractions can be given a new lease of life through integrated media, special effects and theming making it a quick and easy transition, with minimal structural work required.”

Legoland celebrates a soaring 50th anniversary
Denmark’s Legoland Billund welcomed guests to a refurbished Legoredo Town in order to celebrate the park’s 50th anniversary. The main attraction of the new and improved Legoredo town is the Flying Eagle (Flyvende Ørn), a Zierer installed roller coaster that takes riders through a Rocky Mountains inspired landscape. Perched on the back of a young eagle, the ride climbs 11 metres to the top of a cliff where guests can see the birds guarding their nests. Then, the ride plunges from the clifftop at a speed of 46 km/h, past the lakes and a variety of Lego prairie animals. The Danish royal family were invited to attend the inauguration of the new Flying Eagle coaster, and D.K.H. Prince Joachim, Princess Marie, Prince Felix, Prince Henrik and Princess Athena opened the Legoland gates.

hina’s state planner has issued a new guideline to regulate the construction of theme parks. The decision comes after concerns were raised by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) about Beijing’s property
development, blind construction, and local debt risks. In order to tap into the ever-increasing consumer demand, more and more theme parks are opening across China, with developments from Walt Disney, Dalia Wanda, and Sunac China Holdings. The guideline, as issued by the NDRC alongside four other departments, states that theme park developers should strengthen focus on the main business, reasonably controlling the scale of supporting industries around the theme park. Theme park engagement in real estate projects has also been forbidden. This includes residential and commercial buildings, which must be strictly controlled and approved separately from the park development itself.
