Parc Spirou inauguration
planned for June 1 P
arc Spirou are preparing to welcome visitors for the first time this summer. Situated on
the Beaulieu Zone in Monteux – a site at the centre of a new leisure-oriented economic development centre – the park has been designed to emulate
the urban architecture of major American cities. Parc Spirou is inspired by Franco- Belgian comic Spirou et Fantasio, and the park hopes to promote exchanges between generations; attracting young guests as well as parents and grandparents who may have grown up with the Spirou comics. Planned to be family-friendly and child centric, many of the attractions will be accessible to little ones from ages four and up. Currently, German manufacturer
Zierer has provided three rollercoasters to the park; Gold Mine of the Daltons, Racing Gallery, and Train Treetop.
Catherine Powell steps into new Disney Role
Catherine Powell, formerly Présidente of Disneyland Paris operating group, Euro Disney, has been promoted to lead the western region of Disney Parks and Resorts – a newly-titled division. Powell will oversee the Disneyland Resort in
California, Walt Disney World in Florida, and Disneyland Paris, continuing with her current duties until a successor to her post is announced. The Walt Disney Company is currently undergoing a restructure, echoing what has been a successful management restructure for Eastern division of the parks. Powell was named president of Euro Disney S.A.S in July 2016 after a 12-year
career within the company, and during her time at the park oversaw the completion of a revitalisation project, park expansion, as well as a £2bn transformation of Walt Disney Studios Park.
California first dive coaster opens May 18
Knott’s Berry Farm, Buena Park, California, will open HangTime, the first and only dive coaster in California on Friday May 18. From Gerstlauer, the ride will tower 150 feet over the Boardwalk area of
the park and will showcase gravity-defying inversions, mid-air suspensions and twisting dive tracks. HangTime sends riders up a vertical lift hill into a 15- story 96º drop, the steepest drop in California, and comes to a halt once at the highest peak, leaving riders suspended at the crest at a 60º angle to give the illusion of a disappearing track. The coaster pays homage to California’s beach culture by incorporating elements of surfing. The surf themed coaster will only be the second rollercoaster in the Western Hemisphere to feature a negative-g stall loop, which gives riders the sensation of floating.
