people came to Seaside for both of our properties. Having them made the experience of being in Seaside better for everyone being able to walk the boardwalk and visit both ride parks, and all the midway stores along the way.”
But he is pleased with his new rides. “We had to replace Hydrus
Ride Stats Manufacturer: Gerstlauer Amusement Rides Model: Euro-Fighter 320 Height: 72 feet (22 meter) Track Length: 1,049 feet (320 meter) Number of Vehicles: 2, 8 passengers each Elements: • Vertical Lift • 97º Beyond-Vertical Drop • 3 Inversions: Vertical Loop, Cutback, and Heartline Roll
the Jet Star with another coaster, but not just any coaster. We reviewed several proposals and Hydrus was what we felt was the best overall design and met all of our criteria. It differs from the Jet Star with the loop, and inversion. It has lap bar restraints, a 72-foot (22 m) climb straight up the lift hill, and a 97° drop. It’s a lot more exciting than any of the other coasters we’ve had.” In addition to Hydrus’ vertical lift and beyond-vertical
drop, it tracks at 45 mph (72 kph). The roller coaster has two eight-passenger cars equipped with comfortable lap-bar restraints with redundant, hydraulic cylinders that safely keep passengers in the ergonomic bucket seats during the ride. Also, durable magnetic brakes guarantee comfortable vehicle deceleration before they enter the station.
Casino Pier Memories “The reaction has been very positive so far,” Storino reports. “People will enjoy it because it’s just as much fun as the Jet Star and even more exciting. The drop is the best part. Obviously we are hoping for a positive effect, but the overall key for attendance is the weather. That will drive attendance. We’ve been making sure that the entire pier is ready for the
new season, so Hydrus along with the new Ferris Wheel and pier design will hopefully translate into a lot more people visiting Casino Pier.” “Gerstlauer were excellent – from day one. I visited their plant, met their people, and their operation was first class. They were constantly communicating with me during the progress from the day we signed the contract to the day they left the site after testing was completed, they were amazing to work with.” Adam Sandy, Chief Business Development Officer at Ride
Entertainment, said that the experience was a great one for all involved. “We were fortunate to begin speaking with Casino Pier very early in the rebuilding process. Because the coaster was being built on a pier the park had some very specific requirements on size and weight distribution. We were thrilled with the resulting ride and working with Casino Pier was a great partnership, it was our second project with them in 24 months.” Ride Entertainment both sold the attraction for Gerstlauer and installed the coaster for Casino Pier.
The decision to add a Ferris wheel was easy. “We have a big, beautiful new pier,” says Storino. “Casino Pier is back in a big way from the dark days of 2012. What better way to light up the Seaside Sky and give guests a view of our beautiful property than bringing them up 131 feet (40 m) above the pier? Ferris wheels are iconic to amusements. You see them at fairs, amusement parks, and major cities are putting them in now as well. Guests love to sit, relax, and take in the views. It’s an attraction the youngest to the oldest guest can enjoy and enjoy together. So far we’ve had a very positive reaction. People are looking forward to riding it. This isn’t our first ride purchased from Technical Park, we have a good relationship with them. “All we hear is how much fun the coaster is, and how
smooth and quiet it is,” says Mastoris. “That makes everything we have had to rebuild from Superstorm Sandy feel worth it. When we finally opened Hydrus, then the Ferris wheel, it was a very big moment. We can now say we are fully back and can close the books on the ‘Superstorm era.’” As for the future, Storino admits, “We always have things planned. Nothing is certain for 2018 but we have a lot of fun and exciting ideas left to bring Casino Pier memories to everyone for a long time to come!”
