Casino Pier whole again

created when Superstorm Sandy made landfall in New Jersey on October 29, 2012. The storm destroyed part of Casino Pier and the adjacent Breakwater Beach waterpark. It sunk a roller coaster, but five years later the park is whole again and better than ever.

Fortified Pier How difficult have the past five years been? “From the time Sandy hit until July 2013 when we reopened the pier, that was difficult,” recalls Vincent Storino, Managing Member, Casino Pier and Breakwater Beach. “It was a lot of work and constant planning for tomorrow. Once we past the hurdle of recovery, my partners and I decided to complete the waterpark remodel, add a 36-hole adventure mini-golf,

ike a phoenix, the long-lived bird of Greek mythology that rose from its own ashes, Casino Pier, Seaside Heights, New Jersey, has risen from the catastrophe

bring new exciting rides to the existing pier and boardwalk, and then undertook the pier expansion project we are just completing, so there has been a lot to do over the past five years.”

The section of pier destroyed by Sandy was

approximately 300-by-300-feet. The new portion of the pier was built on 1.36 acres (0.55 hectare) of beach that the Storino family, Casino Pier’s owners, traded for with the borough in exchange for the iconic 1910 Dentzel/Looff Carousel, which has resided in Seaside since 1932. The borough also received a parking lot where a pavilion to house the carousel and museum will be built. “We wanted to limit our exposure of the property over the

water,” explains Storino, “as well as be able to be financially feasible to expand. The best solution was to expand along the beach.” Storino believes the new and resurgent pier will be more

robust. “We’ve fortified the pier since rebuilding in 2013 as well as the new pier. We’ve partnered with several engineers to discuss the designs, the pilings are in better patterns, there are batter piles out by the waterline, and we’ve strengthened the design of the footprint. You can never say it will never happen again, but I’m confident in the way we’ve rebuilt it, that we will be able to better withstand future storms.” “Since Superstorm Sandy, our rebuilding plans were all

geared towards fortifying the infrastructure to protect against any potential future loss,” confirms Maria Mastoris, Marketing Manager at Casino Pier. “We [now] have a great roller coaster to replace the JetStar and a new Ferris wheel on our expanded pier that will bring a lot of excitement to the property and springboard us into more new and exciting things in the future.”
