The World Cup Payment Peak That Never Stood Still

s expected, the World Cup was a betting rollercoaster ride. A $1 million bet on Spain to beat Cape Verde, the second-smallest nation to ever qualify for the tournament, probably looked like one of the safer wagers of the group stage. Ninety minutes and no goals later, the bettor had lost the lot.

Cape Verde later pushed Argentina into extra time before losing 3-2. Four days later, Argentina came back from two goals down against Egypt, scoring three times from the 79th minute onwards.
Matches that looked routine before kick-off could become the biggest betting story of the evening by half time. For sportsbooks, the unpredictability showed up quickly in new accounts and payments.
THE PEAKS HIT ON SEVERAL FRONTS
Betting operators saw around 50% more new customers joining their sportsbooks during the early stages of the World Cup. At the busiest points, three times the usual number opened an account in a single hour,
completed identity checks and tried to make their first deposit before placing a bet. Some arrived with a wager in mind before kick-off. Others picked up their phone because an underdog scored, a favourite started wobbling or a match took over the group chat. By the time they reached the deposit page, they may have had only a few minutes left to act.
