Sign of a good day! What is it really like to run your own FASTSIGNS business?


P


eople choose to invest in a franchise for any number of reasons. One of the biggest is


the desire to take control of your working life, by becoming your own boss. So what could you expect from your day as a FASTSIGNS franchisee? FASTSIGNS Franchisee of the Year,


Paul Robinson, invested in his franchise, FASTSIGNS Peterborough, in 2019. Here, he provides some insight into what his typical day looks like.


The day begins… I like to arrive early to switch all the machinery on so it’s ready to go; just like the rest of us, it needs a few minutes to warm up before work begins! I’ll also run some test prints, to make sure everything is working properly. With FASTSIGNS equipment, there are almost never any problems, but I like to be ahead of the game, reducing any nasty surprises that could impact my staff or customers, later in the day.


I like to be hands- on and to build relationships with my regular customers which can really impact what we do for them


Once the team are all in, we catch up on the previous day, and look at expectations for the day ahead. These are a great way for me to ensure my teams – design, production, sales and marketing – are all on the same page, and moving in the same direction with any projects. My personal buzz comes from making


customers happy! I’ll often meet with them on-site and find it beneficial, not just because I can take measurements and see the location of the new signs, but


to fully understand and appreciate what they’re looking for. Sometimes customers have a clear idea about their signage goals, but I like to think my experience means I can address any challenges in ways they might not have thought of. Things move fast in the signage world!


We like to deliver a quick turnaround without compromising on quality. As soon as I’m back in the office, I’ll create the production and design brief so my team can start working on it straight away. Projects are so varied and can be anything from something small like a logo, or a handful of wayfinding, to an entire signage strategy for a large company or public building.


Lunch break; headspace… then let the afternoon commence… Having focused so intently, I carve out some time to refocus myself. You can drive yourself pretty hard sometimes when you’re your own boss, but it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look after yourself! My afternoon may involve the wearing of many hats, depending on what needs


to be done in my business. I might work on quotes for customers, following- up on jobs, meet with members of my team, or look at accounts. I like to be hands-on, so I understand


every nuance of my business. I like to build one-to-one relationships with my regular customers which can really impact what we’re doing for them. No matter how busy my day is, I


believe it’s important to make time to be with my staff on the workshop floor, once I’ve checked in with the production team and I’m aware of their workflow, it’s back to working on the business; organising marketing, planning and contacting customers, as well as planning the targets for the days ahead. 
