Tezlom specialises in healthcare recruitment across the UK. Fra nchise relationship manager Gemma Hussey explains how the business works

What led you to your current role? My industry background was a little different from now! I’d been a business development manager for 12 years, in payroll and accountancy. My days alternated between construction sites and power stations, to offi ces in Canary Wharf - one day with steel-capped boots and the next with four-inch heels. I was in a customer-facing role, working with people from all backgrounds, which gave me resilience. These transferable skills and my ability to communicate, adapt, be fearless and seize opportunities in a male-dominated industry have got me to where I am now. A thick skin is required too, and I’ve got a passion for building relationships. In our industry, you must be brave and stand tall; if you're not confi dent in what you're selling, how can you expect anyone else to be?

How is Tezlom fi lling a gap in the market? Tezlom started as a family-run business and is now an established franchise network specialising in healthcare recruitment. We provide temporary and permanent staff to care homes, EMI (elderly, mentally and infi rm) and dementia homes, hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centres, for mental health, supportive living, learning services, adult and child services and

more. We provide many of the UK’s leading healthcare services with care and nursing staff. Health and social care is one of the few industries in the UK growing at a rapid rate, even in uncertain fi nancial times.

How is the franchise industry encouraging women’s progression in business? BFA events such as EWIB (Empowering Women in Business) shine a light on female leaders, and I'm proud to support this initiative. Women bring several strengths to franchising: excellent communication skills, the ability to build and nurture relationships and understanding the importance of building a community within the franchise system. This relationship- focused approach can lead to increased loyalty, collaboration and trust within the franchise network as well as fostering teamwork. When everyone works towards the same goal, you get there a lot quicker!

What are the brand’s three core values? Empathy for our co-workers, agency workers, clients and franchise partners. Transparency is also key - we encourage you to be as open and honest about yourself and your needs. The third value is loyalty – to our workers, our staff, our clients, our network and each other.

“There is support at every level ... we are also there to celebra te when you hit milestones, exceed expectations and thrive”

How does Tezlom stand out from its competitors? We put people fi rst. We give franchisees full autonomy to run their business, and when we award franchises, it's never a fi nancial decision. It's based on relationship matching, like a marriage. It's not a race to the top, it's about having supported and successful businesses. We would rather have 10 successful businesses than 100+ with a lack of motivation.

What are you looking for in franchisees? There are soft skills and hard skills - we can teach the hard ones, but the soft skills are what you have already – loyalty, empathy, compassion, drive and ambition. It’s about how you make people feel, and these skills come naturally – you know when they are forced. The fi rst two years are always the toughest and if you don't love what you do and are not willing to roll your sleeves up and get stuck in, no one will do it for you.

What level of experience is required? None – we can teach everything. Experience helps with terminology and understanding but it's not a requirement. That's the beauty of a franchise – you are investing in foundations that are tried, tested and proven. Everything else is about willingness to learn. Our team of dedicated managers are ready to help, from setup through to execution. You are never on your own. We have South England, Wales, Northeast, South Birmingham and other areas available.
