The British Franchise Association aims to lead on the sustainability agenda in 2022

he British Franchise Association (bfa), a leading partner in UK franchising, is making the sustainability agenda a key part of its educational agenda for 2022. The association recognises


that environmentally friendly franchises should be a top priority for those wanting to become a franchisee. Retention and recruitment rates can also increase among franchisees when introducing sustainability measures and there is increasing evidence which shows that customer demand for sustainable products is growing. There are many ways franchises can become


more eco-friendly, but an important step for the franchisor is to embed sustainability at the heart of their day-to-day business practice. There could also be a business case to partner with sustainability experts which can lead to financial benefits. A survey by HSBC found that 81% of business leaders surveyed see the financial benefit of improving their sustainability efforts – with a resulting increase in revenue from investing in sustainability. The bfa wanted the opportunity to highlight


the good work of leading sustainable franchisors and decided to introduce a new category in its yearly awards. They introduced a new category into its awards calendar in 2021, with the aim of encouraging the franchising community to evaluate their carbon footprint and rewarding eco- friendly franchising practice. Pip Wilkins, CEO for the bfa, notes: “We

recognise that sustainability is becoming an increasingly important factor for the franchising community. We believe that franchisors will carry on embracing the green agenda and looking at different ways to become increasingly environmentally conscious. We were really pleased to enter the Sustainability Warrior as a new category in our leading yearly awards last year and were delighted by the high standard shown by all applicants, especially the finalists.” Eco champion bfa members Oltco and Cafe2U


were shortlisted for the Sustainability Warrior category at the 2021 bfa HSBC Franchise Awards 2021. Both brands were testaments to the benefits of sustainable franchising for the brand, consumer and wider community. Oltco was then awarded the Sustainability Warrior award due to its innovative sustainable product offering which has demonstrated the company as an industry-leader. In 2019, Oltco launched Recycle Base, the world’s


first sustainable resin-bound solution made utilising waste plastic that is already in circulation such as straws, drink bottles and food packaging. Recycle Bound is ideal for driveways, patios, pathways, balconies and pool surrounds. To date, Oltco has recycled the equivalent of over 150 million plastic straws in Recycle Bound transformations across the UK and Channel Islands. Never ones to rest on their laurels, Directors


Tom Stringer and Johnny Pearce went on to launch Recycle Base in 2021.
