Game changer U

TaxAssist Accountants’ potential pays off for franchisee Renee Mackay

INVESTMENT LEVEL: FROM £36,950

nder the enterprising eye of franchisee Renee Mackay, TaxAssist Accountants continues to go from strength to strength in

Edinburgh and Dunfermline. Since 2010, Renee has built up a client base of more than 1,200 small and medium-sized businesses with 15 employees and a fee bank of £800,000. Such was the demand for her accountancy and small-business services, Renee had to move to larger premises in Corstorphine in 2013 – triple the size of her original offi ce. Renee is no stranger to the franchising world, having run a highly successful franchisee training company for 10 years. She says: “I could see the huge potential

in the TaxAssist Accountants franchise, so it really was a no brainer. They have introduced a completely new approach to accountancy services, which is miles away from the traditional image of the accountant. We are friendly, approachable and professional.” TaxAssist Accountants has been a game changer for both the accounting industry and for small businesses in the way it ‘retails’ tax and advisory services through open and welcoming shops. This concept has proven to be a very eff ective way to build a practice, with many franchisees opening multiple shops in their territory, and is very popular with the buoyant small- business target market, which enjoys the friendly, convenient local service. By following the TaxAssist business model, Renee was able to open a shop in Dunfermline in 2015 in partnership with Janet Maclean, followed by a second Edinburgh offi ce in a joint venture with business partner Alan Johnston in Goldenacre in 2016. Alan says: “I was previously in franchising, owning three Domino’s Pizza branches for 14 years with a combined turnover of £3million, but I was looking for a change of direction. It was then that I met Renee, who is a real powerhouse networker, and as soon as I spoke to her about TaxAssist Accountants, I knew it was the opportunity I was looking for. “You meet a huge variety of diff erent

clients and it is very satisfying being able to support them not only with accounts and tax, but also with helping them grow their businesses. We focus very much on providing excellent customer service and a friendly approach. We are a jargon-free zone and explain tax and accounts in a way that makes sense to our clients. Any accountant can do the mechanics of doing your accounts, but it is the customer service that adds the real value. “Within 18 months in Goldenacre, we have built up our client base of 160 and I have just taken on another accountant to handle the workload. Being part of the franchise is fantastic, as we can tap into resources such as IT and accounting systems, which are often beyond the reach of small accountancy fi rms.” TaxAssist Accountants has been a full member of the British Franchise Association (bfa) since 2003. “Being a member of the bfa has huge benefi ts,” says Alan. “It tells clients that our business follows strict ethical franchising standards and that it has achieved signifi cant milestones at an operational level.” The TaxAssist Accountants franchise

welcomes accountants and commercially experienced individuals keen to build sizeable practices. Franchisees can benefi t from the successful business model, AAA rating with the major banks, increasingly well-known brand name, national deals, lead generation and technical and marketing training and support. With innovative new software and Making Tax Digital on the horizon, the network is already seeing an increase in demand from small businesses starting to prepare for the new tax regime and bringing everything online. TaxAssist has recently launched a TV advertising campaign, which, combined with its unparalleled internet presence and a network of visible shops around the UK, means there has never been a better time to be a part of the TaxAssist network and take advantage of the opportunities that change is bringing.
