MANAGEMENT FRANCHISING

What did you do before franchising and what prompted you to make the change? Amit Tayade: Before franchising I was an HR professional working with global multinational companies in various roles. I moved to the UK and was looking for opportunities to make use of my experience and skills in people management. I did my research and felt that the domiciliary care industry presented a good opportunity as there will be always be need for care at home – and this is only going to increase, since we are all living longer. At the same time, I wanted to run a business that would be fi nancially rewarding and would make a diff erence to people’s lives.

CAREMARK

Amit Tayade and Dominica Dordi are partners and joint owners of a Bristol-based Caremark franchise, providing in-home care services to their local community.

How did you fi nd out about franchising and Caremark in particular? AT: I visited The National Franchise Exhibition in Birmingham. Also, during my research into the homecare sector, I looked at various companies with a franchise model. After that I narrowed my search down to: those that are full members of the bfa and hold a proven track record of success. That’s how I got interested in the Caremark brand.

What attracted you to this franchise opportunity? Dominica Dordi: The reason I was drawn towards a care business was because of the personal experience of caring for my father when he was diagnosed with cancer. One thing that attracted me to Caremark was its vision – to create the mark of excellent care. Plus its proven track record of success, of course! I felt Caremark fi tted well with my aspirations and goals as I wanted to make a diff erence to the community I live in, by providing the kind of quality care that everyone deserves and at the same time build a profi table business.

What was the initial training and support like? AT: The initial training and support was fantastic. We received 10 days of classroom training, which sets you up for success in the business. I did not have a care background, but with the training I felt confi dent I would be able to run my business. From day one you are assigned a dedicated regional development manager who guides you during those crucial fi rst few months and is then available to guide you through key stages of your business growth and development.

How has life changed since you launched your franchise? DD: From an employee to entrepreneur – life has changed! It is more satisfying as you see the business grow from scratch. It is the same feeling you get when you plant a seed, nurture it and see it grow. It gives you a sense of responsibility, ownership as well as sense of satisfaction. It also felt really great to get rated ‘good’ by the Care Quality Commission following our fi rst inspection. We also received a letter from our local MP to acknowledge the contribution we’ve made to the community. All this just confi rmed the fact that we are going a good job and recognition like this is a bonus! It’s so satisfying knowing that what we are doing every day is making a diff erence to each and every one of our clients.

What are the benefi ts of operating a management franchise? Was it your intention to manage, as opposed to being hands on, right from the start of your research? DD: The benefi ts are that you are building a company with people, policies and processes. My intention was always to manage, but initially you have to be hands-on. The fi rst year, I was more involved in the day-to-day running of the business, which enabled us to keep control of our costs. But, equally, you have to invest for growth. It takes time to fi nd the right people, but gradually you build your team and then you have to let them get on with the job. Now, we have a good team taking care of the operational side of things, which allows us to focus on other growth areas of our business.

What qualities does someone need to run a management franchise? DD: A winning attitude, the ability to i nspire and lead your team, focus and discipline, the ability to work under pressure, and professionalism.

What are your plans for the future? AT: To be the number-one care company in Bristol by creating the mark of excellent care. We are continuously recruiting and investing in our people, processes and systems to deliver excellent quality care and meet the ever-increasing demand for home care in our community. In the long term, as we grow, we would consider buying additional neighbouring franchise territories from Caremark.
