Franchise Q&A

David Paulson

Senior manager, global franchise recruitment at TaxAssist Accountants

Q: Why am I better off investing in a franchise than going it alone?

A: A mantra often repeated in franchising states that “you are in business for yourself but not by yourself”. Despite sounding like something of a cliché, it rings true. Some people have the confi dence and experience to establish their own business and operate independently. Many others decide to take advantage of the benefi ts of joining a franchise, which for the fees that you pay, should provide: • A well-known brand name • Technical and marketing training and support

• Investment in research and design • National deals to enable you to grow a more substantial business faster and more effi ciently than going it alone • A proven exit strategy

Investing in a franchise can give you a big competitive advantage over starting your own business from scratch. The franchisor can fi ll in any gaps in your skillset and provide business development support and initiatives so you can stay one step ahead of your competition.

An additional advantage of franchising is that the main four banks remain supportive of lending to franchisees of quality brands, as the risks associated with establishing a franchise are much less than ‘fl ying solo’.

It is also worth noting that franchising

remains almost the sole business model that enables small businesses to compete eff ectively against larger businesses.
