Q: What should I look for in an ethical franchisor?

A: You’re already on the right track if you have ‘ethical’ in your franchise search criteria! Another good place to start is to measure whether the businesses you are looking into follow the British Franchise Association’s (bfa) defi nition of a business franchise format. This means the investment should give the new franchise owner: • Access to innovation and support by a management structure that is robust, creative and delivers proved sustainable businesses


• Bespoke solutions, including full training, site selection and procurement, store design, lease negotiation, marketing and consistent ongoing support


While this is not an exhaustive defi nition, it is a good rule-of-thumb guide to identifying a genuine franchise business. Whether it is within the coff ee shop sector, such as an Esquires outlet, or is in healthcare, kids’ activities, B2B services or a van-based business, an ethical franchise brand should always meet a particular level of quality when it comes to its franchisor practices. Furthermore, you should be left with a saleable asset at the end of the term of your franchise agreement.


Check to see if the brand you are interested in holds – as Esquires does – a bfa membership. Not all of the UK’s brands, including household, reputable names, are members, but doing so means that a franchise has been thoroughly vetted to check that it is running its network and its practices to a high code of ethics.
