f you’re an accountant, or work in fi nance and dream of breaking free and working for yourself, TaxAssist Accountants can make that dream come true.
Exactly six months after he opened his
TaxAssist Accountants shop in Luton, Umer Farooq is celebrating signing his 50th client. Umer has more than 16 years’ experience in accountancy and fi nance and had always wanted to set up his own accountancy practice. It was while working at one of TaxAssist’s offi ces in London that he learned about the franchise model and gained a valuable insight into how the franchisor/franchisee relationship could help him turn his dream into a reality. After attending a discovery day in December 2016, Umer quickly decided that he would like to join the TaxAssist network. He says: “It opened my eyes up to the opportunity and, having seen their success fi rst hand in London, it made my choice to join the franchise much easier. “It was inspiring to meet a number of the existing successful franchisees in the network, many of whom very kindly took time out of running their businesses to share their experiences. I also received lots of help and advice from the TaxAssist recruitment team, who were really accommodating and made sure I had

everything in place to join the February 2017 training course. “After turning 40, I wanted to make some career changes and TaxAssist has given me this opportunity. I work hard, and there are long hours involved, but I can see a time when the business will allow me to spend more time with my family, start playing league cricket and do some more gardening over the weekends!

“I am very satisfi ed with my progress so far and want to say how thankful I am to the support team for all their help and training – I could not have built up my practice without them. I always know, should I require it, expert support is just a phone call away. “That was one of the biggest attractions and it is reassuring for me and my clients that I can tell them we have experts always available for guidance on any complicated issues that should arise.” Having previously worked in Pakistan, Norway and Bangladesh as head of
fi nance with a UN migration agency, Umer is delighted to have fi nally laid down his roots and seen his own business blossom. “Moving around the world has its charms, but there comes a time when you want to settle down in one place,” laughs Umer. TaxAssist has been a game changer for both the accounting industry and for small businesses in the way it ‘retails’ tax and accountancy services through open and welcoming shops. This concept has proven to be a very eff ective way to build a business, with many franchisees opening multiple shops in their territory, and is very popular with the buoyant small-business target market, which enjoys the friendly, convenient, local service. With Making Tax Digital changes on the horizon, the network is already seeing an increase in demand from small businesses starting to prepare for the new tax regime and bringing everything online. With a network of more than 290 highly visible high-street shops and offi ces across the UK, TaxAssist Accountants franchisees are ideally placed to take advantage of the opportunities that change is bringing.
