Hat Week Australia Returns for 2019

5 - 13 July 2019 Various cities in Australia

After the resounding success of the first edition in 2018, Hat Week Australia returns for a consecutive year in July with plans to be bigger and better. The week will be filled with new and exciting workshops from some of the most inspiring milliners in Australia.

Stephen Jones Hats

at the Royal Pavilion Until 9 June 2019 Brighton, UK

The latest millinery exhibition at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton has further established Stephen Jones as a curator of hat-centred museum shows and nicely parallels the V&A’s blockbuster exhibition Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams, which features the milliner’s work (see Diary section). And owing to huge popular demand the Dior show has been extended from 15 July to 1 September 2019.

For the exhibition in Brighton, Stephen Jones filled the Royal Pavilion with over 160 hats, including some of the most famous designs that highlight his 40-year millinery career. The site-specific exhibition is set in the exotic rooms of the Regency building which was constructed more than 200 years ago as a seaside pleasure palace for King George IV.

Stephen Jones said: “I grew up in a seaside town, but Brighton to me seemed exciting, exotic, and it symbolised art and freedom. In 2012, I designed a collection called ‘Chinoiserie-on-Sea’ for which I researched Brighton, and in particular the Pavilion, extensively; and it feels like showing my hats there is almost like a homecoming. I have never had the opportunity to display hats in the environment which inspired them.”

The exhibition, in partnership with Harvey Nichols, was co-curated by Stephen Jones OBE and Martin Pel, Curator of Costume and Textiles at the Royal Pavilion and Museums.

In addition to the workshops, there will be other demonstrations, social functions and fun events (such as high teas, open studios and photography sessions) taking place throughout the major cities around Australia including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.

Hat Week Australia aims to promote Australian milliners and their designs, as well as build awareness and encourage the wearing of hats and headpieces. Most importantly, Hat Week Australia provides learning opportunities nationwide for hat enthusiasts and hat makers.
