WORKROOM TECHNIQUE

18

Take the sinamay off the block and put in the wire frame. Match the centre marks of the sinamay and the wire.

19

Line up the wire frame with the basting thread on the seamfold and the tucked corners, and pin the outside line down.

20

Start adjusting the length of the wire to get the right curve. I’m going to take 1 cm off the outside length at each corner.

21

Mark the new position of the corners on the wire and use your pliers to adjust the shape to the new size.

22

Sew the sinamay with a whip stitch to the wire. Start in the middle and keep about 0.5 cm between the stitches.

23

Use a dolly to decide on the final curve of the wire for the head. Reset the Sellotape on the wire to the new size.

24

Measure an overlap of 7 cm and trim off any excess wire. The overlap will be tied together with thread. Use a four double thread, hook it onto the wire and put a tiny bit of glue on it.

25

Pull a couple of binds over and let it dry. Continue to add glue to the wire and bind over until the overlap is covered.

Some people say that you have to match the selvedge when cutting a bias strip, but if we do that, the grain won’t match. It’s better to fold your material diagonally and match the weaving lines.

26

Pin the head side of the wire in place by putting a pin on either side of the wire.
