to create more space in their costume warehouse. It is mostly chorus and extras’ costumes that are sold; costumes specially made for stylistic or technical purposes or for soloists are kept for reference and exhibitions. These public sales always attract a huge interest from a very broad audience.
For Ton’s team, the most exciting and rewarding thing is working on new productions. They especially love trying out new techniques they haven’t done before. “Sometimes a creation needs a bit more time. You will suddenly wake up in the middle of the night because you found the solution. I am always most proud of the crazier one- off pieces we make. Crowns are fantastic to do as well; big hats too are always fun. I see every opera we have worked on. It is not only exciting to see the result of your work, but also very instructive. You then see how the designs turn out on stage, in the right surroundings and light – very different from when you see it here in the workspace!”
