Foreword #81 | May 2019

Last December, Jane Smith reflected briefly on her fifty-year career as a theatrical milliner, then happily got back to her work. We visited Jane in her studio to hear more about this special milestone and then we met up with a number of theatrical milliners from other countries who also are marking their anniversary this year. And so in this issue we find ourselves celebrating some 155 years of combined experience in film, TV and theatre. What all of these milliners strongly emphasised in their stories was that they are not the designers of the creations they made. They are the specialised professionals who execute the designs they receive from the costume designers and are not supposed to add any artistic interpretation of their own. This is very different to what hat designers generally do: putting a lot of energy into creating designs that clearly carry their own hallmark. On page 62, some of these designers tell us what it takes to keep their creativity buzzing.

Occasionally, with all the information to hand, we find that an 84-page magazine is not enough to cover everything. After laying out the last page, we are still left with photos and tips that we’d like you to see. So we recently set up a Pinterest account with boards that are linked to items we covered in The Hat Magazine. If you are inspired by the inspiration sketches on page 68 and would like to put your own collection on paper or if you’ve forgotten how to make a certain stitch that was mentioned in a workroom technique, then please do check out: www.pinterest.com/ thehatmagazine!
