HAT NEWS Judges’ Competition Winners

Winner Chris Mullane created a piece featuring a flock of birds inspired by the design statement of one of the designers, Lucy. “I wanted to make a statement about women from all walks of life working together and supporting each other, to take flight and move forward as a collective group.” Chris started her millinery journey about four years ago when she enrolled at Kangan Institute. She has continued to develop her skills and took part in the Awon Golding class hosted by The Millinery Association of Australia. Developing the technique from the class, she transformed it into the wings of the bird of her winning piece Metallic Flock.

Katherine Cherry finished her second- place piece with just ten minutes to spare. “The piece needed to be bold, and incorporate design elements from the dress, without being a complete match.” Currently working part time as a milliner, Katherine enjoys entering competitions as it allows her to challenge herself. She created the wired headpiece titled Zubie’s Crown, incorporating beaded panels that sparkle under the light, and crin panels.

Laura Dunnington’s third-place piece was designed to feel like an extension of Dani Stewart’s Whispered Warrior collection. With a combination of leather base, wirework structure and crinoline trim, the conceptual elements came together for her piece Stronger Than You Think. “A woman’s strength is often underestimated, sometimes even by herself: this piece acts as a reminder that women are stronger than you think.” While studying costume, Laura was captivated by the millinery unit. She continued to develop her millinery skills with work experience at The Essential Hat and in 2014 launched her label Contempromental.

Melbourne International Millinery Convention

Alongside the competition this year was the introduction of a convention hosted at Melbourne Polytechnic Prahran campus. There were 79 delegates who took part in a series of workshops run across the week. A trade show was hosted on the

opening day with suppliers making their stock available and a presentation to the delegates.

The tutor lineup included Catherine Ellen, Eugenie van Oirschot, Faye Thornley, Felicity Northeast, Lindsay Whitehead, Louise Macdonald, Mandy Duncan, Neil Grigg, Rose Hudson, Ruth Smyth, Serena Lindeman and William Bobbie Stewart. When asked if the delegates can look forward to another convention soon, convener Catherine Ellen said: “Team Essential were keen to get this off the ground and we worked hard to ensure its success. Will we run another? Not every year, but yes, how could we not!”
