LONDON HAT WEEK A few hours before the start of the London

Hat Walk, Spanish milliner Laia Molina (www. suteni.es) worked hard to get the headpiece she planned to wear at the walk finished, as

all the hats she brought with her were stolen a few days before. “Last Tuesday, I arrived

in London with a suitcase and a big hat box with five hats in it. When I had a stop at Hammersmith underground station, I needed to buy some food. When I put my hat box for 30 seconds next to me on the ground as I had to pay, someone picked it up and walked away with it. I spent two hours talking to security people and searching for the box, but didn’t manage to find it. I made the base for this headpiece at Carole Maher’s thermoplastics class. I bought the fabric as a sample piece

from a home decor store and I’m adding some trimmings that I bought here at the fair.”

Fiona Smith and Rebecca Gray (both based in the London area) came with a mission: to properly restock their millinery supply. Both made a list of what they needed before entering the fair, either on paper or mentally. Fiona and Rebecca confirmed that they found everything they were looking for, and more. Buntal mats were a material they had not worked with before, but after having seen Carole Maher’s demonstration, they were excited enough to buy them in a variety of colours.

London-based milliner Martine Henry bought two

hat blocks, a few straw hoods and silk abaca. Martine plans to make a few summer hats with the straws and to use

the silk abaca for turbans. She usually buys her abaca silk

in Australia and thought this was a great opportunity to see the material and all the colours at Australian supplier LilyM’s stand before buying it.
