New Hat Shop in Osnabrück

Osnabrück in northwest Germany now has a new hat shop to follow in the footsteps of the Altensell store, which closed at the end of 2017 after over 100 years of business. ‘Hutmanufaktur’ opened in October 2018 and is located close to the city centre near to the fashionable shopping street of Osnabrück and is a short distance from the former store.

Owner Stephani Garbrecht says: “I worked as head of the workshop at Altensell for about 10 years, taking care of trainees. When the shop closed [following the ill-health and death of owner Frau Altensell-Ripprich] I was looking for a smaller space, because the Altensell shop was too big. Here in my small shop I create our own hats, caps and fascinators, and I also sell brands such as bedacht, Bullani, Mayser and Stetson. Osnabrück always had at least one hat shop and I want to keep that tradition going. The customers are glad that there is a hat store in the city again: a lot of them know me from working at Altensell and are happy to see me in my nice new shop.”

The Milliners Guild Returns to the Metropolitan Museum Mezzanine Gallery Gift Shop

For the second time in a year, the Milliners Guild in the US has been invited to create a display of hats to coincide with the Met’s annual Costume Gallery exhibition. The installation will be on view for an indeterminate time and changes as hats sell.

Ellen Colón-Lugo (former president of the Guild) said: “The Guild was challenged to create themed hats that concur with two Met shows this spring to display and sell in the sky-high section of the Gift Shop. For this, Guild members have been inspired by two exhibits at the Met: Instruments of Rock & Roll (from April 8) and Camp: Notes on Fashion (from May 9). The two themes provided a wealth of ideas

for the milliners participating: there are hats that invoke Prince and his signature guitar next to hats that invoke Slash and his top hat predilection in the Rock Category. Under the Camp theme there is a Hairspray reference in a bouffant confection complete with hair rollers facing off to a Carmen Miranda turban piled high with faux fruit in a colorful, playful mix. To paraphrase the divine Mae West: ‘Come up and see us sometime’!”
