INSPIRATION

27

When you’re happy with the result: sew a few invisible stitches where the hat is pinned to itself, to secure the design.

28

Trim the seam allowance at the bottom back to 4 centimetres.

29

Make a few stitches where the pin is to mark the centre back.

Tips!

When sewing with a double thread, always wax your thread first to avoid knots.

Use only long pins on your hat when stiffening, as the chemicals might melt the plastic heads.

30

Fold in the raw edge at the bottom by 1 cm. To do this, you’ll need to make a 1 cm snip at the back point.

31

Finger-press the edge and sew it down with a double thread and a small back stitch.

32

Put the hat back on the mannequin and steam it a little to get the seam back in shape.

33

Shape a wire for the base of the hat. The wire will be sitting just in from the edge, to get a nice soft roll.

34

Give the wire a 3 finger wide overlap at the centre back. Close the wire by twisting a thread around the overlap.

35

Pin the wire in. Try the hat on to check whether it sits nice on your head. If so, sew the wire in with a blanket stitch.

36

Give the hat a quick steam once more while on the mannequin. Cool down and apply stiffener on the inside head fitting.
