MODA
6 - 8 August 2017 NEC Birmingham
MODA, covering ladies’, men’s, accessories and shoes, is UK’s largest fashion exhibition outside of London. Unlike Pure it is extremely accessible by
road and train, and has Birmingham International airport on its doorstep. The NEC is a modern purpose-built exhibition centre, where fashion is just a part of what is on offer; it is also located in the centre of England and therefore attracting visitors from Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
By Carole Denford
With all these positive attributes we always feel MODA should be far busier and attract far more international buyers than it does. The show rarely feels busy and buzzing, and yet most of the headwear companies here show regularly each season, meeting both existing and new customers, and are quite satisfied with the orders taken. MODA takes place within one large open space; it is actually three specific halls and is indicated on the programme as such. Two years ago the organisers decided to move the different sectors to encourage more footfall into the men’s hall. Menswear was then positioned in the centre and accessories scattered at one end. The move of the major headwear labels into one ‘Aisle of Hats’ looked inviting to the visitor, but has been an irritant to the brands and major buyers who sit opposite headwear competitors during each show. The same floor plan was used this season. The cost of showing at MODA is far less than Pure; therefore smaller companies and millinery designers often prefer this show. Being a more British-led event, the summer collections focus on occasionwear, both on clothing and hats, which satisfies many of the independent stores. Over the past few years there has been more interest in UK-made headwear, and this was reflected in the brands on offer this season. The brands that make their collection or part of their collection in the UK were: Whiteley Hat (100%), Snoxell-Gwyther (99%), Vixen (100%), Rebecca Couture (100%), Peak & Brim (100%), Nigel Rayment (50%), with the Canadian company Tilley Endurables making 100% in Toronto. Most of the other brands of ladies’ headwear design collections in-house, and have their headwear made in the Far East. These companies can therefore offer more competitive prices and encourage more hat wearing for all ages.
