Colours & directions
A new word entered the fashion dictionary this year: ‘athleisure’. But here at MODA it was our first opportunity to watch a catwalk show dedicated to this sector. Not an entirely new category of clothing, athleisure was a cross between sportswear and fashion, designed for the younger market, with many of the models wearing soft caps and cotton berets. The occasionwear market for 2018 looked incredibly confident, with large shapes, strong colours and beautiful trims, and was (dare we say it) the busiest sector at the show. Hats with height were still the most eye- catching, as were the large circular brims, trimmed maybe with oversized and complicated flowers. For the less confident or more subdued customer there were small beret shapes with sharp feather trims, smaller hats in strong fashion colours, or simple hair decorations on a band. The strongest colours were pink, red, turquoise, nude, royal, orange and just a touch of yellow or lime, and there was a hint of grey, black and masses of navy. The men’s sector showed trilbys and fedoras in Panama or paper Panama, with a few beach styles that came with smaller brims in more fancy or complicated straw; many of the blocked hats had striped bands. There were linen caps with flat or 8-piece crowns in cream to browns, and light grey to dark navy.
