Hut-Skulptur in Münster
I
nspired by the big exhibition of sculptures – Skulptur Projekte – that takes place in Münster in Germany every ten years, two milliners in the town decided to create their own project. Ana Ehling and Melanie Laukamp set up the international hat contest ‘Hut-Skulptur’ and published their idea online, in magazines and on social media. The subject ‘A sculpture for the head’ sparked a lot of interest and there duly arrived 18 hats from Spain, England, the Netherlands, France and Germany. The jury of Ana Ehling (Hutkunst Ana, Münster), Melanie Laukamp, Marianne Jongkind (‘la grande dame du chapeau’) and Ursula Anna Machalett (Rotkäppchen Designs, Hamburg) rated the hats, which were exhibited in the art gallery FB69 of Kolja Steinrötter.
The winners were 1st prize: Eun Young Lee, Den Haag, NL 2nd prize: Jennifer Rowley, London, UK 3rd prize: Niki Bierling, Spijkenisse, NL
They all won vouchers from millinery supply companies Hoedendingen and Hoedenmallen Van der Broek from the Netherlands and De Vroey from Belgium. The organisers Ana Ehling and Melanie Laukamp were also pleased to give the book ‘Hat Couture’ from Claudia Köcher to the 4th, 5th and 6th prizewinners. The Hut-Skulptur team were grateful for the support of the millinery suppliers and especially of Marianne Jongkind. After opening the exhibition of the winners’ hats, a group of hatted visitors took a walk in the heart of the city. This first Hatwalk in Münster was a great occasion for many visitors to stroll with their hat – a mix of felt, straw, caps, cocktail hats, turbans and also some fantastic creations such as a fur hat with cherries.
