VISITING MELBOURNE

we work together with hat shops to give our students’ creations a level of exposure. In August, a selection of racewear designs was on display in The

Eternal Headonist’s city store. Earlier this year the felt hats of this group were displayed in the shop window of The Essential Hat.”

One of the first-year students, photographer and producer Lisa Watt explained the task they currently have in hand, “We’re learning flat pattern making at the moment, which is quite unusual for us as we all came in thinking it was all going to be racewear we would be making. It’s really nice though to learn about something that’s going to be worn a bit more practical. So far, we have learned how to start with a basic pattern for a beret. The next step is creating a toile, before we proceed to making the final hat with the fabric we have chosen.” The women who have signed up for this class come from a diverse mix of backgrounds. Their daytime jobs can vary from mine truck driver to midwife. In their love of hats, however, they have found a passion in common, according to their course leader, Serena. “This class has already turned into a close group of colleagues and friends, which is good for the future if they need help from somebody. They are all very serious about their education and are well on track to becoming aspirant members of the Millinery Association of Australia.”

The Essential Hat

In Prahran East, in Melbourne,

Australia, you will find The Essential Hat, a shop with a strong focus on hats for special occasions and racewear.

The shop has been located in High Street for over 20 years, and changed hands four years ago, as the new owner, Catherine Ellen, explained. “When I bought the business from Susan Drerup a few years back, we went on a trip to Europe together to get introduced to the trade shows and to meet some milliners. Since then I go back every year in March to visit Première Classe in Paris, and to learn about the trends for the next season. As there’s a half-year difference in season between Australia and Europe, we’re always a half-year ahead in our shop
