RIDING SHOTGUN WITH THE MKH 8018 Sennheiser
BY KEVIN EMMOTT
Making its IBC debut and rounding off Sennheiser’s MKH portfolio at the top end is the company’s ‘climate-proof’ MKH 8018 shotgun microphone. Aiming to provide greater fl exibility to audio engineers, the compact MKH 8018 features three switchable stereo modes: MS stereo, wide XY stereo and narrow XY stereo.
MS mode allows the engineer to adjust the spatial imaging in stepless fashion on the mixing desk, while the XY modes are premixed in the MKH 8018.
The MKH 8018 is delivered with an MZQ 100 microphone clip and other accessories
To ensure the MKH 8018 is as easy to handle as possible, it uses
an aluminium housing to reduce weight on a camera or boom pole,
and has an operating range of -10°C to 60°C.
Unlike most other mics in the 8000 series, it is non-modular with a fi xed XLR-5M output and integrated pad (-10dB) against overdriving. It also features fi lters for tailoring the frequency response and an additional switchable (-3dB) low-cut fi lter at 70Hz. Designed for broadcasting and fi lming, the usual wide frequency response of the MKH mics has been limited to avoid any overloading of the mixing console with inaudible distortion below 40Hz and above 20kHz, where ultrasonic camera lens measurement systems are active. 8.D50
