FCE17: Marijuana and E-Cigarettes 10:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Periodontal and Systemic Interrelationships
Moderator: Cynthia Yee Speakers: Purnima Kumar and David A. Scott
Over the past few years, both electronic cigarettes and marijuana have dramatically increased in use. E-cigarettes have emerged as popular alternatives to conventional cigarettes. Seven years after their introduction in the U.S., 20.4 million individuals (including 2.5 million high schoolers) are using this product. They are legal, touted in the media as effective smoking cessation aids, and have surpassed conventional cigarettes as the most popular “tobacco” product among young adults. Similarly, marijuana is legal for adults over the age of 21 in nine states, and medical marijuana is legal in 29. Evidence is emerging that these two habits may have implications for oral health, particularly periodontal health. This presentation will discuss the latest evidence by two of the leaders in research in this area.
Educational Objectives:
• Describe the chemistry of the compounds in these two habit inducing products.
• Examine how these products impact oral and periodontal health.
• Gain action items to take into practice and share with their patients.
FCE18: Restorative Materials: What Every Surgeon Should Know
10:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Emerging Concepts and Innovative Therapies
Moderator: Alejandro Kovacs Speakers: David L. Guichet and Chandur Wadhwani
The long-term success of dental implants is directly correlated with the placement of an adequate restoration. Restorative driven treatment planning in implant dentistry is paramount for the achievement of predictable results. This set of lectures will demonstrate how the introduction of digital technologies can predictably lead to remarkable treatment outcomes and how choosing the proper abutment materials can help with the maintenance of the implant/soft tissue barrier seal.
Educational Objectives:
• Describe how to implement a fully-digital, facially-driven workflow in interdisciplinary treatment planning.
SERIES
• Introduce a pragmatic step-by-step process where guided dentistry, treatment simulation, digital preparations, printed restorations, and team communication come together to help design beautiful smiles.
• Explain the importance of choosing the correct abutment material and how it relates with the long-term health of the soft tissue implant interface.
• Comprehend limitations of newer abutment materials and how they represent a potential hazard with biocompatibility.
FCE19: Predictable Periodontal Surgery Outcomes: Flap Designs, Defect Management, and Wound Closure
10:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
Treatment of Periodontal Diseases and Peri-Implant Diseases
Moderators: Flavia Q. Pirih and Takahiro Taniguchi Speakers: Tetsuya Mizukami and Shaun A. Rotenberg
Periodontal surgery is constantly evolving giving clinicians a multitude of means by which to regenerate the hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity. Therefore, there is a need to appropriately choose treatment procedures and strategies. This course will discuss surgical methods that combine the benefits of flap design techniques and regenerative materials to provide effective and predictable results for the most common surgical situations encountered by a periodontist. This course will empower the clinician to make decisions that will lead to effective and predictable results.
Educational Objectives: • Recognize the goals of technique selection.
• Discuss the characteristics, benefits, and limitations of flap design, including anatomic factors.
• Identify techniques and regenerative materials to provide effective and predictable results.
