EV2: Results from the World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions

Moderator: Jack Caton

Speakers: Gary Armitage, Kenneth S. Kornman, and Panos N. Papapanou

Complimentary with full attendee registration; limited attendence. Ticket valid for initial 15 minutes of the course based on the start time indicated above. Failure to arrive within that timeframe will result in invalidation of ticket. AAP reserves the right to request proof of session registration.

Join members of the Organizing Committee as they discuss the findings from the World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions. The new classification reflects what has been expertly reviewed today about the diseases and attempts to:

• Improve clinicians’ level of comprehension and appreciation of disease progression.

• Clarify gingival health and mucogingival conditions and address peri-implant diseases for the first time.

• Eliminate overlap of former disease categories and achieve more diagnostic precision.

SERIES Educational Objectives:

• Learn how worldwide consensus was reached and how the new classification differs from the 1999 version.

• Familiarize yourself with an innovative model for identifying and diagnosing periodontal diseases that introduces a multi-dimensional staging and grading system, similar to the method used in oncology.

• Gain an appreciation for the complex nature of each patient and his/her individual response to treatment.

• Describe what new dental students will be taught about identifying and classifying periodontitis in their patients.

AAPF1: Future Horizons in Periodontology: Peri-Implant Disease and Associated Regenerative Alternatives

10:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.

This session will consist of three speakers highlighting future directions and emerging concepts in periodontics. The speakers are faculty and practitioners who have benefited from American Academy of Periodontology Foundation initiatives. Each speaker will give a 20-minute presentation, followed by a discussion.

10:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine, and Oral Diagnosis

Moderators: Praveen Gajendrareddy and Hector F. Rios Speakers:

Fernando Suárez López del Amo - Etiopathogenesis of Peri-Implantitis: Beyond Plaque

Educational Objectives: • Explain the multifactorial etiology of peri-implantitis recognizing the various local, systemic, and implant- related factors associated with the disease.

• Recognize the role of titanium particles on the peri-implant cell population.

• Identify the focus of new investigations aiming at further elucidating the role of titanium particles in the peri-implant environment.

Sivaraman Prakasam - Alveolar Regeneration – Bench to Clinics

Educational Objectives:

• Discuss efforts to develop a novel tissue-on-chip platform to systematically study alveolar regenerative and osteolytic processes based on how organs-on-a-chip, or “tissue-chips,” integrate micro-engineered substrates with microfluidics technologies with the goal of replicating tissue/organ level functionality. These chips allow deconstructing the tissue/ organ of choice into their distinct essential elements and enable systematic, precise, and tunable testing of each individual element’s contributions to tissue homeostasis.
