New for 2018
Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018
Clinical and Basic Science Symposium Sponsored by District 8 8 - 11 a.m.
All registered participants are welcome to attend.
Periodontics residents from the Veterans Administration, Army, Air Force, and Navy will provide 10-minute presentations on their clinical and basic science research. The presentations cover a wide variety of topics, and each speaker will have five minutes to answer questions following the presentation.
Moderator: Cmdr. Keith Merchant Speakers, Presentation Titles, and Educational Objectives:

• Consider oral care needs to prevent non-ventilator associated hospital acquired pneumonia (NV-HAP) in susceptible populations.
• Identify opportunities/strategies to collaborate with medical/nursing care providers in developing/ implementing oral care protocol for in-patients to substantially reduce their risk of NV-HAP.
• Explain the mechanism by which calcium chelator gel might impact the formation of plaque and other clinical parameters.
• Describe the science behind osseodensification, evaluate the various clinical applications of osseodensification, identify the indications for using osseodensification, and understand the potential clinical benefits to both the patient and the surgeon.
• Discuss the rationale for utilizing either Nd:YAG laser or air abrasive technology in the decontamination of implant surfaces and understand the limitations and predictability associated with each modality.
• Review the potential biological mechanisms associated with the healing of a critical-sized defect.
• Identify the potential role that Bone Morphogenic Protein-2 in healing and its effect on the biological processes.
• Describe factors associated with increased horizontal ridge width in guided-bone regeneration.
• Review available biomaterials available for guided-bone regeneration procedures.
• Understand the relationship between stem cell activity and rhBMP-2 concentrations in the rat calvarium, critical-size defect model.
• Assess the magnitude of expected horizontal gains during ridge augmentation procedures.
• Evaluate the success rate of implants placed in augmented bone.
• Grasp the effect of thymol on androgen receptor expression and activation in OSCC.
• Describe the mineral volume and density of mandibular incisor enamel in enamel matrix protein-deficient mice expressing the hypoplastic AI phenotype.
• Determine if the Bmp2 gene is required for development of acellular extrinsic fiber cementum (AEFC) from αSMA+ cells and attachment of PDL and AEFC.
