WTM LONDON’S SENIOR DIRECTOR SIMON PRESS ON THE EVENT, P20 Pegasus sales soar Pegasus Airlines is seeing a resurgence

Pegasus Airlines (EU1200) has underlined Turkey’s resurgence with a continued phase of expansion. The Istanbul-based budget carrier launched flights to Oman and Saudi Arabia’s business hub Dammam this summer. It has seen the return of foreign passengers, with July and August 2017 seeing a 46% year-on-year leap in the number of non-Turkish citizens travelling, compared with downturns of as much as 41% in summer 2016 following terrorism events in Turkey. Mehmet Nane, the carrier’s chief executive, said 2017 had seen “a

WILD LIFE Rwanda to open new national park

Rwanda (AF750) is gearing up for the 2019 opening of a new national park, as luxury accommodation providers continue to invest in the country. The Gishwati-Mukura national park will open to the public next year in Rwanda’s north-west. It is situated on the highest ridges of the Congo-Nile Divide along the bio diverse Albertine Rift and will be a venue for bird watching, hiking and trekking to see chimpanzees and colobus monkeys. Meanwhile, a new luxury accommodation option from One&Only, Nyungwe House in the forested Nyungwe national park, opened in October. This will be followed by a second property near Volcanoes national park, a gorilla-trekking destination, at the end of the year.

Also at the end of 2018, Wilderness

Safaris (AF531) will be expanding in Rwanda with a new six-tented camp, Magashi, overlooking Lake Rwanyakizinga.

Rwanda is gaining more of a tourism profile, with Visit Rwanda signing a three-year deal as Arsenal football club’s official tourism partner this summer.

The country saw a 21% increase in UK visitor numbers last year with more than 16,000 business and leisure travellers arriving.

RwandAir will add a fourth weekly flight from Gatwick to Kigali over the peak Christmas period between December 14 and January 11. The carrier launched direct London flights last May and has confirmed plans to fly to Addis Ababa, Guangzhou, Tel Aviv, Guinea and New York, bringing the airline’s number of destinations to 31.

cautious recovery” in the aviation sector, adding: “We predict real growth will begin in 2018. The positive trends in the sector and our own company confirm our beliefs.”

Nane said he had “complete confidence” in Turkey’s economy, aviation and tourism potential. “In 2018, Pegasus aims to increase its guest numbers and capacity by between 11 and 13%,” he added. In the first half of 2018, Pegasus achieved record load factors of 88.4% for domestic flights and

80.5% for international routes plus a record ancillary spend per person of €11. Pegasus carried 14.4 million passengers, compared with 12.6 million in the first half of 2017. The carrier made a net 2017 full-year profit of £63.5 million on turnover of £660 million, with passenger numbers up 15.2% to 27.8 million. This year, the airline has upgraded its mobile app and frequent flier programme. The app now has a check-in facility and carries special offers such as extra baggage discounts. The renamed

Pegasus BolBol frequent flier scheme can now be joined by submitting a mobile phone number. The airline’s base, Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen airport, will be connected to the city by metro from the end of this year and will have two runways by summer 2020. Pegasus will launch services from Istanbul New airport from 2020, but its main base will remain at Sabiha Gokcen.

Getting in the spirit at Carnival of Barranquilla

FESTIVAL FUN

Colombia gets into the groove

Colombia (LA400) will emphasise its music tradition – including the second largest carnival in the world – along with its natural environment during WTM London.

A series of live music events will take place on the Colombia stand throughout the show.

The country, which is sending a 25-strong delegation to WTM London, will highlight events such as the Carnival of Barranquilla, which takes place in February or March every year. It is second only to the Rio de Janeiro Carnival in scale and yet receives a fraction of the attention.

“The calendar is full of events, fairs and festivals in which Colombians celebrate their beliefs and identity through music, dance, theatre, gastronomy and religious celebrations,” said a spokesperson. Another attraction the country is keen to highlight is Bogota’s Gold Museum, which reputedly houses the largest collection of gold artifacts in the world. Among the 50,000 pieces are 20,000 objects belonging to pre-Columbian cultures.
