The inaugural International Travel & Tourism Awards, presented by WTM London, will tomorrow announce the winners of 13 categories designed to celebrate the best of travel and tourism on a global scale. More than 70 destinations, tourist boards, private sector companies and industry-relevant individuals have been nominated for titles ranging from Best Regional or City Campaign, Best Food Destination and Best in Adventure Tourism to Best Tourism Marketing Agency, Best National Tourism Board/NGO Campaign and Most Innovative Use of Technology within a Destination. Paul Nelson, International Travel & Tourism Awards co-founder, said: “We have been delighted with both the volume and quality of the entries for the International Travel & Tourism Awards.” Charlotte Sutton, the other co-founder of the awards, added: “We’ve had some incredible entries from across the globe – from destinations as diverse as the Faroe Islands, Japan, Peru, Slovenia, Manchester and Kerala – and they all demonstrate how tourism is playing a vital role in the economies
EXPANSION PLANS $1bn investment for El Al
Israeli national carrier El Al (EU1760) continues to improve its fleet, having signed an agreement this year for 16 new Boeing Dreamliner aircraft. The investment of more than
$1 billion will be felt most keenly on the carrier’s European routes, where economy class is being improved in line with the new seating configurations allowed by the 787
aircraft. Slimline seats, allowing more legroom, are being added to the economy cabin, and a new premium economy class is being introduced, offering wider seating with more legroom and a greater seat recline. Business-class seats are also being upgraded. In addition, El Al is adopting a new “Branded Fare” pricing model for economy class tickets to all European destinations, enabling passengers to customise their flight and access lower fares. The new model is based on three different family-branded fares – Lite, Classic and Flex – that promise to simplify the booking process.

of different cities and regions.” In order to determine the winners of each category, a distinguished panel of independent judges was drawn from top industry organisations such as London & Partners, Euromonitor International, public relations body PRCA, Global Wellness Institute, Association of
Southern African Travel Agents and LGBT consultancy Out Now. “Our judges were extremely impressed by the entries, making it quite a task for them to whittle them down. Those who are on the shortlist should know they have reached a very high standard,” said Sutton.
The first International Travel & Tourism Awards is expecting more than 500 attendees and will take place tomorrow at London’s Grade-I listed Tobacco Dock from 6.30pm. Tickets cost £400.
HUMANITARIAN WORK
Award for TV actress
The World Tourism Awards will today see actress Maggie Q presented with the World Tourism Humanitarian Award in Platinum Suite 3&4 from 4.30-5.30pm.
Known for her roles in TV series such as Designated Survivor and Stalker, and the Divergent film franchise, Maggie Q is “humbled” to have been awarded the accolade for her fundraising work with Kageno, which she describes as “a beautiful model in responsible tourism”. Kageno is an organisation that works with impoverished
communities in Kenya and Rwanda, where it runs programmes to address issues surrounding clean water, healthcare, conservation and education. So far, it has helped to build schools, health centres, pharmacies and sanitation systems, and implemented environmentally sustainable tourism initiatives. Kageno’s founder, Frank Andolino, said: “Maggie’s impact has been powerfully felt by thousands of people, especially women and children, and the ecosystems in the countries and communities where Kageno serves. Her support is key to the success of our mission to transform impoverished communities into places of hope and opportunity.” This year, Maggie Q’s passion and support will help raise funds for Kageno to build a new full-service maternity centre and an eco-lodge, the construction of which will give jobs to ex-poachers and unemployed locals, and bring much-needed dollars into the community via tourism. She added: “My friend Frank Andolino never planned on visiting a country and returning soon after to give back to the culture and its people. It happens when you open your heart to the need, and tell yourself: ‘I can do more’.”
