Grenada sets sights on eco and luxury push

April Hutchinson

The Caribbean island of Grenada is to see a significant boost to its luxury room stock with the arrival of Silversands Grenada, a new 43-suite hotel on Grand Anse beach. It is the first new hotel to open on the beach for 25 years, has already become a member of Leading Hotels of the World and has “the longest pool in the Caribbean”, measuring 100 metres.

Owned by Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawirisand, who said he “fell in love with the island” as soon as he arrived, Silversands will also have nine villa residences for sale. Sharon Bernstein, Grenada Tourism Authority’s UK director, said: “This luxury boutique hotel, the first to open on the award- winning Grand Anse beach, adds to the prestige of the island, and underscores the destination’s commitment to quality and innovation. We are really looking forward to welcoming Silversands

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT WTM LONDON? It always has a great buzz about it. For me, it’s an especially wonderful opportunity to thank all of our valued partners with whom we enjoy such strong relationships and who contribute so much to our business. And we will certainly be making sure we do just that.

Next year will also see the opening of Kimpton Kawana Bay, the second hotel for the brand in the Caribbean.

The 146-room and suite hotel will be set on a hillside overlooking Grand Anse beach and is slated to open next December.

Meanwhile, Calabash Luxury Boutique Hotel has reopened after its annual refurbishment. The eco-friendly composite decking in its new Beach Club restaurant is made from recycled wood and film created from 840,000 recycled plastic bags that may otherwise have ended up in the ocean. Other sustainable initiatives include the continued expansion of the Underwater Sculpture Park to further enhance its role as a valuable marine habitat. Visitors to the island continue to grow, with a 10.5% increase in international arrivals year-on-year in August to 111,446.

■ Grenada Tourism Authority (CA265) will be giving away some PureGrenada Goody Bags, packed with spices and chocolates from the island, at 4pm daily.
