Intracoastal Waterway

Texas

New Jersey

INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY SYSTEM (ICW) Tis waterway on the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico uses its own unique markings of a yellow triangle G and a yellow square L. Since there is no obvious approach from seaward for the ICW, the Conventional Direction of clockwise rotation around the U.S. land mass is used. As a result, the marks toward the mainland side of the waterway are designated as marking the right side of the waterway by a yellow triangle G, and the ones toward the sea are the leſt side and marked with a yellow square L. When following the ICW from New Jersey to Texas, a yellow G should be leſt on the boat’s starboard side and a yellow L on its port side, regardless of the color of the navigation aid on which they appear. Te prudent navigator will follow charts closely and carry an up-to-date ICW cruising guide.

The Intracoastal Waterway is a network of protected inland water routes winding from New Jersey to Texas.

The yellow triangle on this red daymark indicates the starboard (mainland) side of the ICW channel.

Tere are places along the Intracoastal Waterway where its waterway and a channel leading in from the sea coincide. If the directions of the two systems are the same, the yellow triangles will be on the red marks and the yellow squares on the green marks. But if the conventional direction of the ICW runs opposite to the “returning from seaward” direction of the channel, the U.S. Marking system for the channel prevails and the yellow triangles will be on the channel’s green marks and the yellow squares on the red marks. Extreme care should be taken when passing the junction of the ICW and a channel leading in from the sea. Te mixture of marks can be very confus- ing, but if you follow the yellow ICW symbols, you should not get lost.

The yellow square on this green daymark marks the port (seaward) side of the ICW channel.
