SAILING DOWNWIND After sailing upwind, bearing away and sailing downwind is more relaxing and comfort- able. The sails must still be trimmed properly relative to the wind direction, but the motion of the boat is usually more gentle. Don’t become too relaxed, however! You must still keep an eye out for other boats. If the wind shifts or you sail too far away from the wind, the boat could jibe ac- cidentally, throwing the boom across the cockpit suddenly.


By the Lee When the wind comes over the same quarter as the boom(sailing by the lee), the boom can swing across the cockpit out of control. If the jib goes limp and starts to cross the boat, this is a warning that you’re sailing by the lee. You can prevent an accidental jibe by heading back up toward the wind.


Pull Mode


Sailing across the wind or upwind, the wind flowing along both sides of a sail creates lower pressure on the lee side of the sail, which pulls the boat forward.

Push Mode


On a broad reach and a run, the wind simply pushes against the sails and moves the boat forward.
