SAILING UPWIND Sailing upwind requires some practice. Sails must be trimmed in close to the cen- terline and the boat steered attentively, while observ- ing the jib telltales. After a while you’ll find “the groove” where the boat is making good progress to windward, moving easily through the water, with a comfortable amount of heel.
Te sails are trimmed all the way in so that the wind flows smoothly off both the main and jib.
STEERING TIPS
• Don’t oversteer the boat. Make your course changes small ones for a smoother ride.
• Use the masthead fly and telltales to help sail “in the groove.”
• Head up slightly in puffs to keep the boat from heeling over too much.
• Keep your head up to watch the sails and the wind on the water as it approaches you.

The deck level wind direction read- out (apparent wind indicator) gives you the angle of the wind relative to the boat’s centerline.
The masthead fly points to the direction from which the wind is blowing. With practice, you’ll sense how close you can steer to the wind and stay in the groove.
On a steering wheel, a piece of tape or line gives you a reference point (the king spoke) for when the rudder is centered. With a slight weather helm, this mark will be positioned slightly off center.
