PART 5

USING SPRING LINES Muscle power isn’t always enough to push the boat from the dock. A spring line works as a lever to turn the boat when you power against it.

Reminders • Be sure crew members know when and how to release the lines.

• Always take in the spring line quickly to avoid wrapping it on the propeller.

• Retrieve the fenders and stow them and the lines aſter you clear the dock.

Springing off with the forward spring line 1 With the forward spring line doubled, cast off the bow and

stern lines and then the aft spring line. Center the helm and put the engine into reverse gear with slow throttle.

Springing off with the aft spring line 1 With the aft spring line doubled, cast off the bow and stern

lines and then the forward spring line. Center the helm and put the engine into slow forward. Then turn the rudder toward the dock to push the stern out.

The crew releases the line and takes it in

Doubling a Dockline Doubling a dockline is a very useful technique that allows you to release the line from aboard the boat as you leave the dock. To double back a line, pass it around the dock cleat and back to the boat.

Note: Pilings oſten have rope stops which keep the dockline loops from slip- ping down them. For pilings with- out stops, you will need to tie the docklines to the pilings.

Docking at a pier with pilings 1 Steer the boat straight between the

pilings passing close to the windward one so a crew member can put a stern line loop over the top of the piling. The other end of the line should go to the after deck cleat.
