Preparation


Some jibs are stowed by rolling them around the headstay. You unfurl the sail by pulling the jib sheet and you furl it by pulling on a line attached to a drum at the base of the headstay. Keep ten- sion on the furling line when unrolling the sail to prevent the line from snarl- ing and jamming on the drum.


Choosing a Headsail The working jib fills the triangle made by the mast, forestay and deck and is good for medium to heavy winds.


A genoa is a large jib that overlaps the mast and gives the boat more power in light to


medium winds.


Te forward end of each jib sheet ties into the clew of the jib with a bowline knot, which is both strong and easy to release.


Te tack of the jib attaches at the base of the forestay. Again, be sure the connection is secure so the sail doesn’t come free unexpectedly.


Attach the luff by clipping the special hooks (jib hanks) onto the forestay.


Use a couple of sail ties to wrap the jib into a bundle. Loop the sail ties around a stanchion as well and the sail will lie safely on the deck until you’re ready to hoist it. (Don’t for- get to remove the sail ties first!)
