Your First Sail


HOISTING THE JIB After the mainsail is up and ready, you can continue heading into the wind or turn slightly to one side so the wind partially fills the sail. Leave the jib sheets loose as you hoist. After securing the halyard, trim the sail.


Do’s and Don’ts • Don’t grind the halyard up if you meet resistance. Do keep an eye aloſt to make sure the sail or halyard isn’t stuck or wrapped around anything. Also, make sure you stop when the sail is fully hoisted.


• Stand clear of the boom as the sail is raised. Te luffing sail will swing and shake the boom, sometimes vigorously.


• Don’t get in the way of hoisting the jib. Do stand clear of the sail and the sheets as the sail goes up and starts to luff.


• Don’t turn off the engine until your sails are up and working. At that point, if the auxiliary is a diesel, stop the engine before you turn off the ignition key.

If the front part of the jib shows vertical wrinkles (below leſt), the halyard is too tight. Ease the halyard just enough so that the wrinkles disappear and the front of the sail is smooth (below right).
