MARINE TOILET AND MSD SYSTEM The toilet (head) is part of the Marine Sanitation Device (MSD). Proper use and regular inspection of the entire system is essential to your cruising comfort. Always explain the operation of the head to your crew to avoid unpleasant mistakes. The head is connected to a holding tank because Federal Regulations prohibit pump- ing waste overboard, unless you are more than three miles offshore in the ocean. Raw-water comes into the head for flushing and the discharge flows into the hold- ing tank by using the manual double action pump. Some boats use fresh water from the boat’s tanks for flushing. The holding tank can be emptied at pumpout stations frequently located at marinas.
HEAD OPERATION CHECKLIST
• Open raw-water (seawater) seacock.
• Open valve to holding tank.
• Engage hand or foot lever and pump a small amount of water into bowl before using.
• Engage hand or foot lever to flush, and pump until bowl is clear. Then pump additional strokes to make sure the discharge line is clear.
• Release hand or foot lever and pump bowl dry.
• Close all valves and seacocks after use.
Do’s and Don’ts • Never pump a head with the valves or seacock closed. If this happens, you will feel resistance while pumping. Stop immediately and check valves and seacock.
Small cruising boats may have a portable head which has a built-in holding tank. The whole unit is carried off the boat to be emptied.

• Don’t put anything in the head except a small amount of toilet paper or something that has been swallowed first.
• Leave the bowl and toilet clean for the next person.
• Close the lid after using so it does not slam shut underway.
