Coordination between the helmsman and crew will help sail the boat upwind faster and more efficiently. Com- municate with each other about sail trim and changes in the wind strength and direction.
Jib Trimmers Trim the jib and let the helmsman know when puffs of wind are coming. Also look out for other boats or obstructions.
Mainsheet Trimmer Trims the mainsheet. If the boat heels too much, the trimmer eases the main- sheet to get the boat back to a comfortable angle of heel.
Helmsman
Steers a “snake” course upwind, sailing as close to the wind as pos- sible to gain distance to windward and then away from the wind a little to maintain speed. Calls for in and out adjustments in sail trim. If there are only two crewmembers, generally one steers and the other adjusts the sheets.
