Many people have contributed to Basic Cruising in many ways. In addition to the superb team of the design director, designer, illustrators, writers, and photographer, there were many generous volunteers and experts who reviewed, edited, and gave techni- cal advice. Special recognition goes to Rob Johnson, Design Director at SAIL magazine, who with great patience and ingenuity assembled all the many pieces from the team and turned them into a book. But none of this could have happened without the support of the Officers and Board of Directors of US Sailing, the Commercial Sailing Committee, the Training Committee, the Safety at Sea Committee, Sail America, sailing schools, and charter compa- nies. We acknowledge and thank them all.

Mark Smith, Designer

A lifelong sailor, graphic designer, editor and illustrator, Mark is cur- rently Creative Director for North Sails. Mark was editorial and art director for Yacht Racing/Cruising magazine (now Sailing World) from 1970-83, editor and publisher of Sailor magazine from 1984-86, and

editor and art director of American Sailor from 1987-89. His works include design and illustration for the Annapolis Book of Seamanship by John Rousmaniere, published by Simon and Schuster. Mark lives in Norwalk, CT with his wife Tina and daughters Stephanie, Natalie and Cristina.

Diana Jessie, Writer

Diana enjoys racing and cruising, and has completed a 60,000 mile circumnavigation. Tousands have attended her cruising seminars and read her articles in SAIL, Sailing, Yachting and Yachting World. At present, she lives and works (on a computer in the quarter berth)

aboard her 48-foot sloop in San Francisco Bay.

Shimon-Craig Van Collie, Writer A dedicated sailor for over 40 years, Shimon cruised and raced the waters of both the East and West coasts. As a sailing journalist, he covered sailing and boardsailing since 1979. Shimon was a regular contributor to Latitude 38, West Coast editor of Sailing magazine and authored the book

Windsurfing: Te Call of the Wind, published in 1992. He died tragically in 2000 of cancer. Sailing has lost a wonder- ful talent and a wonderful person.

Kim Downing, Illustrator Kim grew up in the Midwest doing two things, sailing and drawing, so it’s only natural that his two favorite pastimes should come together in the production of this book. He has been the technical illustrator for SAIL magazine since 1988 and is the proprietor of Magazine Art and

Design, which provides technical illustrations for books and magazines worldwide. He and his family enjoy cruis- ing and occasional racing on the Great Lakes aboard their 26 foot sailboat.

Rob Eckhardt, Illustrator A graphic design professional, Rob is currently Art Director of SAIL magazine and has many years of ex- perience as a designer for advertising agencies, publications and his own business clients. He is a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technolo- gy, Rochester, NY. Rob began sailing

dinghies as a youngster and currently enjoys one-design racing and coastal cruising.

Chuck Place, Photographer A professional photographer for seventeen years, Chuck has worked for a wide range of clients, including National Geographic, Time, Smith- sonian, Travel & Leisure and SAIL magazines. Working out of a home base in Santa Barbara, CA, Chuck is able to combine his love for the

ocean and images by photographing sailboats, one of his favorite subjects.

David Norton, Designer An avid sailor who grew up racing dinghies on Naraganset Bay and cruising New England waters on his family’s Pearson 36, Orion – David is currently the Associate Art Direc- tor for Cruising and Sailing World Magazines.
