Under power, a boat responds to the wind as it pushes on the hull. The effect of this push (wind- age) can change the way the boat moves, and will vary with the amount and direction of the wind. With practice, you’ll learn to compensate for windage.
If your boat is head to wind, the pressure on the bow causes the turn to tighten.
If your boat is stern to wind, the turn will be enlarged.
When the wind pushes on the forward side of the hull, the bow will “fall off” until the boat lies across the wind or farther. To avoid “falling off,” steer directly into the wind.
