To set an anchor, get the angle of pull as close to horizontal as you can. This will help dig the anchor’s flukes into the bottom. A more vertical angle of pull will prevent the flukes from burying or break the anchor free.
SETTING AN ANCHOR
Since you usually can’t see your anchor once it goes overboard, you need to know how it works. Anchors dig into the bottom and hold best when pulled from a low angle. Let out plenty of rode to help set the anchor. You’ll feel a solid pull when it buries itself.
Scope
Scope is the ratio of the length of your anchor line (rode) 1 to the depth of the water plus freeboard. 2 Adequate scope var- ies from 4:1 to 7:1 depending on various factors such as the amount of chain in your rode (less scope) or rough weather (more scope).
2 1 1 2
Extra protection on the anchor line where it comes on board protects against chafe.
