Peggy Guggenheim Collection VENICE, ITALY
Jean Arp, Umberto Boccioni, Alexander Calder, Leonora Carrington, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Leonor Fini, René Magritte, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Germaine Richier, Gino Severini, Clyfford Still and Emilio Vedova. These are just a few of the great masters and formidable artists exhibited in Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, a treasure chest of Istrian stone on the Grand Canal, where the great American art collector Pegg Guggenheim lived for more than 30 years. Today the Pegg Guggenheim Collection is
among the most visited museums in Italy for modern and contemporary art. With equal amounts of flair and passion, Pegg Guggenheim amassed a unique and staggering art collection, the core of which she assembled in London, Paris and New York between 1938 and 1947. In 1948, her collection was exhibited at the first post- war Venice Biennale and made an immediate impression on the art world. The following year Pegg acquired Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, an unfinished 18th-century
palace, which still hosts her museum today. Visitors can also enjoy the Nasher Sculpture Garden, which includes works by Arp, Ernst, Alberto Giacometti, Jenny Holzer, Mario Merz, Henry Moore and others, as well as sculptures on temporary loan from other foundations and galleries by Marino Marini, Anish Kapoor and Maurizio Nannucci. The museum’s mission is to preserve the legacy
of Pegg Guggenheim through education and the promotion of art as a tool for personal growth and the development of critical thinking. It operates under the principle that art is of paramount importance and should remain accessible to everyone. The Pegg Guggenheim Collection is accessible to all, including people with limited mobility and visually impaired visitors, and offers free collateral events related to the temporary exhibitions, such as webinars and workshops, and also daily free presentations about the permanent collection and Pegg Guggenheim’s life. The museum is open daily from 10am to 6pm, and is closed on Tuesdays and 25 December.
