T

he fi rst time I truly felt like a Londoner was when I took my inaugural journey across the city as a bicycle commuter. Using the Tube had always felt more like time travel or

teleportation; going underground and then popping up in an entirely new place half an hour later. But cycling opened the city up to me in new and wondrous ways, enabling me to see it as a sprawling constellation of interconnected places rather than a collection of dots on a Tube map. One of the best ways to connect with a city is by exploring its

outdoor spaces under your own steam. In this issue, we set off on a series of urban adventures, including dipping into some of Europe’s best spots for city swimming, from Icelandic geothermal pools to the ponds at Hampstead Heath in London (p.10). We then pedal through some of the best metropolises to explore on two wheels (p.18), before setting off on hiking trips and walking tours around the continent’s best green spaces located in or around cities (p.24). And, of course, there’s our round up of the best hotels and resorts,

brought to you by our advertising partners, to help inspire you when planning your next city escape (p.30).
