Hotel Beethoven Vienna VIENNA, AUSTRIA
The family-owned four-star Hotel Beethoven is steeped in culture and cuisine. It occupies an enviable location on the bohemian Naschmarkt, opposite the Theater an der Wien, just a few minutes walk from the Vienna State Opera, Musikverein, Museumsquartier, traditional Viennese coffeehouses and vibrant shopping streets. While relaxing in the beautiful lounge on the
mezzanine floor, you’ll come eye to eye with the statue of folk figure Papageno, who lends his name to the Papagenotor gate of Theater an der Wien. Feel at home in the historic hotel on the traffic-calmed Papagenogasse, before setting foot outside the front door and finding yourself in the middle of the market bustle of the colourful Naschmarkt, between fine foods, stalls and lifestyle bars. The owners of the hotel wanted to capture the
atmosphere of Vienna while also telling the story of the diverse culture of the city. This is why each floor is devoted to a particular theme, making the Viennese presence tangible.
The first floor is perhaps the closest you can
get to the Viennese coffeehouse culture of yore, conjuring up images of characters drinking a melange (a Viennese version of a cappuccino) while reading the newspaper or playing chess. The richly decorated rooms are named after writers such as Friedrich Torberg, Josef Roth, Egon Friedell, Hugo Hofmannsthal, Karl Kraus and Stefan Zweig, in honour of the creativity and ideas that originated in the city’s coffeehouses. Their presence is as noticeable in the rooms as in their works, which are often highlighted at special readings in the library at the hotel. Anyone who knows Vienna loves the
contradiction of this city. High culture and cosiness, cosmopolitanism and petit bourgeoisie at the same time. Lvdwig, the hotel bar, is an ode to this unique lifestyle. The design is by Gregor Eichinger, the drinks by Isabella Lombardo. The bar is also open during the day, which is a good thing, since it is located in the cultural and culinary heart of the city — between the Secession, Naschmarkt and Theater an der Wien.
