Be IN it to win it

their experience. It is always a bit nerve-racking - cooking in front of strangers - but this competition goes with the job. It’s an inspiring event. Nobody is

forgotten about and the students leave better chefs than when they arrived. Obviously winning is important to gain an automatic place on the Specialised Chef Scholarship, but we have taken on runners up as well due to their level of ability. The experience they gain on the day is invaluable. Where else would they have access to feedback from the excellent chefs this competition has on board? This competition gives youngsters an insight into what our courses offer and offers us judges the chance to identify future talent.

Lesley Waters - Head Judge.

It’s such a positive day - there is so much support from all the judges and also from past

competitors who want to be involved, giving their advice and life experiences in the industry which is invaluable. Once the winners have been announced we sit down with all the entrants and give them feedback and talk through the dishes they have cooked. We encourage them with advice and with key learnings for the future. When I was a student I had support like this, but not to this extent. The contestants are always invited back so they can demonstrate how they have developed from the advice given. You can never

stop learning! When I was a young student chef my

lecturers were very pro competitions - entering me and many students for Hotel Olympia. I won two silvers, a gold and a scholarship to work in Germany. I then took a position at Leith’s restaurant in Kensington as Commis Chef as a result of this accomplish- ment. The chefs and judges are so passionate as they have all been in a similar situation in their careers. We would not be in our roles now without great mentors and it is so important to help young chefs to achieve their goals. The Teflon DSA does just that.
