5.2 CD1: 45 Read the explanation below and listen to the examples.
Linked words: Consonant + vowel When a word ends in a consonant sound and the next word begins with a vowel sound, the words may seem to be linked, e.g.,:
add‿up What‿are these? the main‿objective
Inserted sounds: Vowel + vowel
When a word ends with a vowel sound and the next word begins with a vowel sound, a /w/, // or /r/ sound may seem to be inserted, e.g.,: do /w/ anything try /ə/ out no /w/ idea /r/ of it
Disappearing/changing sounds: Consonant + consonant
When a word ends with a /d/ or /t/ sound and the next word begins with a consonant, the /d/ or /t/ sound often disappears, e.g.,: next day rapid growth
