TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Spotlight SPOTLIGHT ON
MIKE DUNNE Technical Director, Buildings, Stantec
M
ike Dunne BEng (Hons), IEng, MSVHsoc, TMIET, ACIBSE, FIHEEM, AE(V), is one of the newest Authorising Engineers (Ventilation) to join the IHEEM register of experts, having achieved this
milestone earlier in 2025. While his current focus lies within the Ventilation Technical Platform, his professional journey began in a very different place. Leaving school at 16, Mike pursued electrical engineering at college in Bury, Lancashire. At 17, he secured an apprenticeship with a switchgear manufacturer, where he discovered a passion for control systems, changeover circuits, and large-scale electrical installations ranging from 250 to 6,300 amperes. His early career included key contributions to high-profile projects such as Chill Factore – an indoor skiing and snowboarding facility in Manchester, Beetham Tower in the same city, and the Financial Conduct Authority headquarters in London. In 2009, following redundancy, Mike transitioned into the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors – bringing with him a deep
technical grounding from the switchgear industry. It was here that his career truly accelerated. He progressed rapidly, taking on roles including Electrical Engineer, Commissioning Engineer, Medical Commissioning Lead, Service & Aftersales Technical Manager, and ultimately Technical Director for his company’s healthcare division. Over the years, he has continuously developed both his technical and leadership skills. In 2023, he graduated with a First Class Honours in Engineering from the University of Central Lancashire, with a thesis focused on the NHS’s Net Zero ambitions. However, he reflects that some of his most valuable lessons have come from real-world challenges – and especially those involving people, purpose, and the responsibility that comes with supporting critical systems. “One of the most rewarding aspects of my career,” Mike says, “has been mentoring others with a similar mindset
One of the most rewarding aspects of my career has been mentoring others with a similar mindset – helping them grow into confident, capable healthcare engineers
– helping them grow into confident, capable healthcare engineers. Ensuring that skilled individuals are available to support the sector has always been a personal priority.” Aligning with this mentality, Mike has also written and delivered many HTM 03 CPD sessions for several years, and has supported this journal with two webinar sessions about good ventilation design. Speaking about his work in healthcare, Mike notes: “Once you become involved in this sector – regardless of your discipline – you quickly understand the importance of every project, call-out, and conversation. I’ve had a deeply rewarding time supporting both public and private sector clients across the UK, and advising international colleagues on a broad spectrum of electrical and mechanical issues.” In August 2025, Mike embarked on a new chapter, moving into consultancy after 16 successful years with a market-leading UCV manufacturer. He now serves as Technical Director – Buildings at Stantec, based in Manchester, and provides Authorising Engineer (Ventilation) services to a growing portfolio of NHS and private healthcare clients across the UK, as well as leading the delivery of complex MEP and multidisciplinary engineering projects. The coming year is pivotal for Mike and his new team. He says: “The addition of another AE to the team at Stantec is a major
step forward – not just for us, but for the wider industry. Our vision is to deliver multidisciplinary, engineer-led advice that’s deeply connected, well-informed, and collaborative. We don’t want to be seen simply as a subcontracted resource. We want to be recognised as an extension of the in-house engineering and estates teams – whether it’s responding to infection control concerns, or offering RIBA stage input on major redevelopment projects, we’ll be there to support.” Mike is rightly proud of the path he’s taken so far, and his AE(V) accreditation is just the latest chapter in his story. With clear goals for the future, he is excited by the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, and by the chance to make a lasting difference in the healthcare engineering community with his team at Stantec.
