TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Membership Expertise

Chair. Both are long-standing IHEEM members and registered Authorising Engineers (Water), who bring deep expertise and a shared commitment to advancing water safety and compliance across healthcare estates. Under this new leadership, the WTP

is actively reinventing itself to become the recognised IHEEM authority for all matters relating to water. This includes not only domestic hot and cold water systems, but also wastewater, Reverse Osmosis (RO), and other closed- loop systems critical to healthcare environments. The Platform’s scope is expanding to reflect the interconnected nature of water hygiene, system design, and operational risk. A key focus of the group is inclusivity.

Register, with a further two currently being processed/considered. The Platform is also supported by around a further 27 technical members, who provide a forum for discussion and peer review of ventilation-related topics. Since the initial re-launch during 2020, regular committee meetings of the VTP have taken place, with the next meeting scheduled to take place during the IHEEM annual conference in Manchester in October, where we would welcome anyone to attend who has an interest in healthcare ventilation issues. It is intended at this next meeting

to review the current specific topics identified within a planned programme, and this is expected to assist in the identification and agreement of areas for research or supplementary guidance documents, which small working sub- groups from each area of specialist interest will take forward.

Current progress and achievements The VTP has continued to provide

comments and feedback on both the development of the new and revised HTM and HBN guidance documents. It has also continued to identify and respond to clarifications or queries raised through IHEEM members to develop and publish a range of both Briefing Notes and Supplementary Guidance Notes on healthcare ventilation issues and existing standards. For full details, please see the VTP page on the IHEEM website. The Platform’s key objectives for 2026 and beyond include continuing to:

• Develop additional technical September 2025 Health Estate Journal 17

• Build the AE(V) Register to ensure improved access to reliable and

membership of the VTP and expand the knowledge base and resource sharing, both within the VTP and beyond, to raise awareness on the role of ventilation in healthcare.

• Promote and develop best practice in the field of healthcare ventilation.

professional advice and support for all those with responsibilities for healthcare ventilation.

• Identify and elect a new chair for the VTP, as the current Chair’s term expires

in October 2026.

Water Technical Platform

Harry Evans, WTP Chair

The IHEEM Water Technical Platform (WTP) has entered an exciting new chapter with the recent appointment of Harry Evans as Chair, and Dr Nick Hill as Deputy

While AE(W)s remain central to its technical leadership, the WTP will look in the not-too-distant future at opening its doors to the wider IHEEM membership. This includes Responsible Persons (RPs), Deputy Responsible Persons (DRPs), and individuals with a professional interest in water-related knowledge who may not be pursuing AE registration. By broadening participation, the Platform aims to foster collaboration, share best practice, and support continuous professional development across disciplines.

Structural reform The WTP is currently undergoing

structural reform to support this vision. Plans are underway to establish working groups, develop guidance, and host events that reflect the diverse challenges faced by Estates and Facilities teams. The Platform also intends to strengthen its links with other IHEEM Technical Platforms to promote systems thinking and integrated risk management. These developments mark a pivotal moment for the Water Technical Platform. With renewed energy and a clear strategic direction, it is well-positioned to become the go-to resource for water safety, innovation, and leadership within IHEEM.
